Poverty is usually defined as a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and essentials to enjoy a minimum standard of life and wellbeing that is considered acceptable by society . The World Bank however chose to define it in definite terms . It defined extreme poverty as ” living on less than two dollars a day .” Keeping this definition in mind , it produced an alarming report recently stating that 60•19% of the Pakistani people fall into the category of the ” extreme poverty stricken ” people . This was an alarming report that sent shockwaves throughout Pakistan . Even a country like Pakistan with a history of a percentage of people living in poverty could not have ever been thought to boast such high levels .

As critics of the government pointed out , this was a huge increase from the statistics of 2008 which showed the levels at near 40% . After severe discussions among the government , an economic survey of Pakistan was carried out which confirmed the World Bank report.  This statement was issued by the finance minister Ishaq Dar who expressed concerns on behalf of the government on the issue .

Though people often pointed fingers at Pakistan’s high fertility rate , there seemed to be deep rooted reasons  for this case The blame when thoroughly thought about always seems to fall on the political elite of Pakistan either directly or indirectly . They have been accused of mismanagement and corruption regarding the running of government machinery which severely affected the running of the country. The government has always failed to come up rule and law regulation schemes to get people to pay taxes . Even if two percent of the public did pay taxes , there was no proper way of checking corruption and making sure that the money found its way safely to development projects rather than the pockets of corrupt officials . This caused the political elite to loose its reputation and the people started to look forward to private NGOs to contribute to the society .The funds that were meant to be spent on creating jobs for the poor are usually spent on construction projects e.g. metro rather than on building schools . Due to the half hearted manner in which the family planning methods were carried out , the government failed to cope with its targets and thus the underground extremist network was able to carry on its propaganda more efficiently especially with its slogans encouraging people to ”  have more children as Allah is responsible for giving prosperity to whom He wills ” . These twisted religious texts have been common in recent years among the terrorists to gather support for their ideology . Then as the government failed to tackle these underground networks that spread like a plague in Pakistan , these terrorists started recruiting new members from among the Pakistani public to carry on their ” struggle ” . This struggle aimed at purifying Pakistan of western values involved massive amounts of attacks on NGOs , foreign investors and companies and tourists . Thus sending out an impression to the world that Pakistan does not welcome ‘ outsiders ‘ . This message had a strong impact as a large percentage of foreign companies began to search for alternatives outside Pakistan . As schools teaching ‘ western languages or ideas ‘ were also attacked , a further message was sent that Pakistan did not wish to welcome any outside ideas either . This was when many entrepreneurs like Bill Gates withdrew their projects from Pakistan and shifted to countries like India and Kenya .

What was left of the foreign investments in Pakistan withdrew after attacks on polio vaccination programmers and women education e.g. attacks on Malala Yousafzai which gathered huge world response in the shape of sanctions and boycott as they believed that the Pakistani government had to first prove itself capable of defending and honoring women rights and eradicate polio to come to further terms with the world community. As Pakistan began to be viewed more and more with terrorism, companies all around the world began to reject or consider Pakistani employees with doubts and thus the scope for the youth to search for jobs outside the country fell dramatically. as for those inside the country , the employment sector suffered greatly due to the high amount of unemployed youth . As army operations began all over the country against terrorists, whole populations had to be evacuated in order to carry out operations and thus millions of children were deprived of education . Often when they returned to their hometowns, the found the schools destroyed and the government again failed to provide funds for renovating them. Millions of people began to become unemployed and thus had to look for jobs in the primary sector as they lacked the proper skills demanded by the secondary or tertiary sectors of the economy. The primary sector began to increase and the secondary and tertiary sectors declined.

Thus, due to all these reasons poverty still continues to increase at alarming rates as our political elite has failed again and again to tackle population growth , declining international reputation of the country and terrorist attacks . We need to consider these areas if we intend to eliminate poverty from our soil and set ourselves on the track to achieving prosperity.
